International Women’s Day: Spotlight on Inspiring and Amazing Latinas!
We know we spend an awful lot of time loving on the hombres, but in honor of International Women’s Day, these gringas wanted to take some time to highlight the Latinas that inspire us! Now, we don’t really think that honoring women should be saved for just one particular day of the year. Yet, we thought this was the perfect reason to salute women that are using their fame to do good in the world. It was hard to pick just one Latina each (I guess that means we’ll just have to do more of these posts!), but after some brainstorming we came up with our final choices. Below you’ll find the reasons why we admire the lovely ladies Salma Hayek and Shakira !
La Rubia Admires: Salma Hayek
Whether you consider her talent both behind and in front of the camera (as actress, producer and director), her confidence, always speaking her mind, never afraid to stand out, or her poise, handling media criticism and fan push back with dignity and calm, there are so many reasons to admire an amazing mujer like Salma Hayek. One reason she really stands out to me, as I ponder the many, many, many women I look up to, is the efforts she has made to bring media attention and awareness to the abuse of women worldwide.

Last year in particular, she worked on a collaborative project with actress Jada Pinkett Smith and her organization dontsellbodies.org that demonstrated that the sex trade and human trafficking, the dehumanizing and life crippling abuse of women, is thriving, claiming victims everyday on an international scale and often goes unseen. Hayek directed a short form music video for the project that featured Smith singing the piercing song “Nada Se Compara.” The video’s narrative shares an important perspective: that coercion into the sex trade and human trafficking is subtle and psychologically abusive, often perpetrated by individuals the victims have come to trust.

As someone who cares passionately about the rights and protection of women everywhere, I wholeheartedly respect women who use the power they’ve gained to help others. The abuse of women through human trafficking and the sex trade is a tragedy. In honor of International Women’s Day, follow Hayek and Smith’s lead by getting involved. Find links below.
La Roja Admires: Shakira
While she might not be the most obvious choice…I really do admire Shakira.
Many artists try, but Shakira has had incredible crossover success from the Latin music industry to the mainstream US stage and has earned two Grammy awards, eight Latin Grammy awards and 12 Billboard Latin Music awards to her name. She is also the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time and the second most successful female Latin singer behind Gloria Estefan. But that’s not why I admire her so much….
Not only can she compose amazingly beautiful songs and dance like no other, but its really her work as a philanthropist that I find so incredibly inspirational. She has taken advantage of fame and her moments in the international spotlight (like her recent pregnancy), and turned them into opportunities to spread the word about the causes and organizations that need the attention.
In an effort to improve the lives of and provide an education to Colombia’s children, Shakira founded the Pies Descalzos Foundation in 1997, and in 2006, she was honored by the UN for her great work with this organization. Shakira was named a Global Ambassador for UNICEF and is currently hosting a Virtual Baby Shower in honor of her new baby and collecting donations for children in need around the world.
“I wish I could change big things…we all wish that. But at least I can change some little things. The big puzzles are built with small pieces.” -Shakira
Those are just a few of her awesome accomplishments…Shakira really is an inspiration to us all!
