America Ferrera Showcases Acting Skills In New WIGS YouTube Series, Christine.
Ever since her days on ABC’s hit series Ugly Betty, remake of the Colombian telenovela, Yo Soy Betty, La Fea, and her role in the tween franchise Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, I’ve been a big fan of American Ferrera. She’s a solid actress, and I’ve never seen her in a role she didn’t play well. I have to admit though, that since those hits, I had kind of lost tabs on the young actress (now producer)…until now. Ferrera is starring in a recently debuted webseries, Christine on YouTube Channel, WIGS, and I love it.
I heard about this a couple weeks ago, and finally got around to watching it…and am very glad that I did! The series includes 12 episodes of shorts chronicling the experiences of Christine as she participates in a speed dating service. Each episode features a new date, and the style of writing and directing is wonderfully subtle. The focus is entirely on the characters and their semi-awkward, very human and very relatable interactions. The emphasis on characters is clearly intentional as indicated by series director Rodrigo Garcia who had this to say:
“I love the speed dating scenario because it addresses right away my favorite mystery: identity. Who is this person really, and what does she want for herself?”
Besides the interesting direction, writing and concept, what I really love about this series is how it showcases Ferrera’s skills as an actress. It takes a lot talent to be able to successfully pull off a short film that doesn’t provide any kind of distraction from the actor, and America demonstrates that she can handle the pressure.
